En sentido espiritual pueden llamarse gentiles los enfermos de este mundo, debilitados por las enfermedades de los pecados, cayendo de todas partes sin fuerza sus miembros, incapaces de poderse tener de pie e inútiles para la marcha. El misterio de su conversión se halla en la curación del siervo del centurión, de aquél de quien ya hemos dicho bastante que era el príncipe de las gentes que habían de creer. Quién sea este príncipe lo dice el cántico de Moisés en el Deuteronomio ( Dt 32,8), donde por cierto dice: "Constituyó como término de las gentes el número de los ángeles del Señor".

Reflexión: Sinceridad, humildad y esperanza. Estas tres virtudes fueron las que impulsaron al Centurión a pedir clemencia a Cristo. Pedía clemencia para un servidor, al que apreciaba y que estaba enfermo. ¿Podemos tomar como ejemplo al Centurión y rogar unos por otros? Orar unos por otros es un don que no llegamos a valorar ni a entender del todo.

Spiritually interpreted, the Gentiles are the sick in this world, and afflicted with the diseases of sin, all their limbs being altogether unnerved, and unfit for their duties of standing and walking. The sacrament of their salvation is fulfilled in this centurion's servant, of whom it is sufficiently declared that he was the head of the Gentiles that should believe. What sort of head this is, the song of Moses in Deuteronomy teaches, "He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the Angels." (Dt 32,8)

Reflection: Sincerity, humility, and hope. These three virtues were what prompted the Centurion to ask for mercy from Christ. He begged for mercy for a servant, whom he appreciated, and who was ill. Can we take the Centurion as an example and pray for each other? Praying for each other is a gift that we do not value or understand at all.
