Subió al monte para significar que eran menores los preceptos divinos que fueron dados por Dios por medio de sus profetas al pueblo de los judíos, a quien convenía advertir por medio del temor, y que se dispensaron mayores gracias por medio del Hijo de Dios, cuyo pueblo era conveniente librar por medio de la caridad.

Reflexión: San Juan nos dice que Dios es Caridad. Dios es Amor que trasciende las querencias humanas. Amor que se dona hasta la muerte por nosotros. Amor que espera pacientemente que abramos la puerta cuando Él nos llama. Amor que nos toma de la mano para que no nos ahoguemos. Amor que señala el camino, pero respeta que nosotros le ignoremos.

He ascends the mountain to shew that the precepts of righteousness given by God through the Prophets to the Jews, who were yet under the bondage of fear, were the lesser commandments; but that by His own Son were given the greater commandments to a people which He had determined to deliver by love.

Reflection: St. John tells us that God is Charity. God is Love that transcends human wants. Love that is donated to death for us. Love waiting patiently for us to open the door when He calls us. Love that takes us by the hand so that we don't drown. Love that points the way, but respects that we ignore him.
