No despreciemos la voz de Dios - Let's not despise the voice of God
---------------------------
They say therefore, "We have played music to you, and ye have not danced;" i. e. We have called on you to work good works to our songs, and ye would not. We have lamented and called you to repentance, and this ye would not, rejecting both preaching, as well of exhortation to virtue, as of repentance for sin. (Saint Jerome. Catena Aurea Mt 11, 16-19)
Reflection: When Christ calls us to have hope, faith, and charity, we are not always willing to follow his words. We find it hard to see beyond the appearances that this world weaves around us. We are not able to see God as the Light that guides us in the dark. We prefer to stay in a dark corner crying to follow the Light of God.

San Juan señala a Cristo - Saint John points to Christ
-------------------------
There is no reason to exclude, after John, other prophets, for we read in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 11), that Agabus and four virgins, daughters of Philip, prophesied (Acts 21,8-11). But everything the Law and the Prophets prophesied, whose writings we read, has been fulfilled by Christ. Then when it is said: they prophesied until John, the time of Christ is designated, because the one that those who announced that he was to come, John announces to him that he has come. (Saint Jerome. Catena Aurea Mt 11, 11-15)
Reflection: Saint John the Baptist points to Christ clearly. Calls us to do penance. The penance that entails sacrifice and humility. San Juan called from the solitude of the desert because, for him, it was important not to shade the One who was to be born. In the same way, we must evangelize from the simplicity and austerity of the place where God has placed.

-----------------------------
Why is the mystery of celestial innocence destined for a bride and not for a virgin still free? Why should jealousy of a fiance endanger the fiance? Why does so much virtue seem sin and eternal salvation a danger? (...) What is the mystery we embrace here, brothers? No pen feature, nor a letter, nor a syllable, nor a word, nor a name, nor a character from the Gospel ceases to make divine sense. A bride has been chosen to be already designated the Church, the wife of Christ, as the prophet Hosea says: «I will marry you forever, I will marry you in justice and in law, in love and mercy; I will marry you in faithfulness and you will know the Lord »(Os 2,21-22). (St. Peter Chrysologist. Sermon 146, on Matthew 1.18; PL 52, 591)
Reflection: As San Pedro Crisólogo says, the whole Gospel has a meaning that transcends the words that contain it. The entire Gospel is Living Water that calls us to approach Christ. What God inspires has its indelible mark. We have to thank God for this wonder that has bequeathed us.

A tal extremo, oh Cristo, mi Dios, has descendido. (San Juan Damasceno. De la declaración de la fe, cap. I; PG 95, 417- 419)
--------------------------------
You nursed me with the spiritual milk of your divine utterances. You kept me alive with the solid food of the body of Jesus Christ, your only begotten Son and our God, and you let me drink from the chalice of his life-giving blood, poured out to save the whole world. You loved us, O Lord, and gave up your only-begotten Son for our redemption. And he undertook the task willingly and did not shrink away from it. (...) Thus you humbled yourself, Christ my God, so that you might carry me, your stray sheep, on your shoulders. You let me graze in green pastures, refreshing me with the waters of orthodox teaching at the hands of your shepherds. You pastured those shepherds, and now they in turn tend your chosen and special flock. (Saint John Damascene. The Testimony of faith, 1; PG 95, 417-419)
Reflection: Christ attends to the lost sheep that needs your help. He also waits at a distance for the sheep that believes itself to be self-sufficient and does not believe it needs God. He hopes his heart is cleansed of pride and pride. Wait for the sheep to kneel and pray to God. God awaits us all, but we are not always able to realize.

Quien cree, no teme - Who believes, does not fears
--------------------------
Reflection: Whoever loves God does not fear the hand that he tends to offer mercy. Who beliefs in God does not expect revenge from Him. Whoever approaches God with humility and trust, finds the Light that guides him on the path of holiness. Whoever welcomes the Light in his heart becomes a symbol of Christ among human beings.

Amar y dejarse amar - Love and let love
-----------------------
Each of us possesses the manifest energy of the Spirit in proportion to the faith that is in him (cf. Rom 12.6). In this way, each one is the intendant of his grace. Anyone who is well disposed can never wish for something from those who are honored by grace since the disposition to receive the goods of God rests upon him. What makes the goods of God remain in us is the measure of each one's faith. Since it is to the extent that we believe that we are given enthusiasm in action. He who acts reveals the measure of his faith in proportion to the work: he receives the measure of grace according to what he has believed.
Saint Maximus the Confessor. Centuria on theology V, 34-35, 42, 45.
Reflection: Faith, hope, and charity. Three colors that make up the Light of God in us. Without faith, nothing makes sense. Without hope, we die inwardly. Without charity, the gifts God has given us weigh on us because we are not able to donate them to others. If we lock ourselves in, we die asphyxiated by our limitations. If we do not accept the gifts of our neighbors, we will wither what we are. As we offer ourselves and receive others, we begin to live in the Grace of God.

San Gregorio Magno, Moralia, 20, 9
-------------------------
By this sentence it is given to us to learn, that among men charity and humility, and not mighty works, are to be esteemed. Whence also now the Holy Church, if there be any miracles of heretics, despises them, because she knows that they have not the mark of holiness. And the proof of holiness is not to work miracles, but to love our neighbour as ourselves, to think truly of God, and of our neighbour better than of ourselves.
Saint Gregory the Great, Moralia, 20, 9
Reflection: Reflection: Who will be saved? For God, appearances, marketing, posturing networks, or being considered an idol have no value. Humility weighs like gold, while pride is like being inflated with nothing. Loving others as yourself is very important, but we can only love ourselves well if we love God completely.

Más que tocar el vestido de Cristo - More than touching the dress of Christ
San Juan Crisóstomo, homiliae in Matthaeum, hom. 52,3
------------------------------------------
These shewed their faith in two points especially, in that they went up the mountain, and in that they believed that they had need of nothing beyond but to cast themselves at Jesus' feet; for they do not now touch the hem even of His garment, but have attained to a loftier faith; "And cast them down at Jesus' feet." The woman's daughter He healed with great slackness, that He might shew her virtue; but to these He administers healing immediately, not because they were better than that woman, ...
Saint John Chrysostom, In Matthew, hom. 52,3
Reflection: Reflection: Humility heals our soul, and if it is God's Will, it will also not cure the life we live in this world. Being healed by Christ requires acceptance and trust. It is not like taking medicine or being operated. The healing of Christ is more profound and more permanent.

Intentemos confiar en Dios - Let's try to trust God
---------------------------------
The truly intelligent person pursues one sole objective: to obey and conform to the God of all. With this single aim in view he disciplines his soul, and whatever he may encounter in the course of life, he gives thanks to God for the compass and depth of providential ordering of all things. For it is absurd to be grateful to doctors who give us bitter and unpleasant medicines to cure our bodies, and yet to be ungrateful to God for what appears to be harsh, not grasping that all we encounter is for our benefit in accordance with His providence. For knowledge of God and faith in Him is the salvation and perfection of the soul.
Antony the Great. Exhortations, nos. 2-3, 132-133, 137, 170
Reflection: The wise scholars of the world are very different from the Wise Men of the East who came to worship Christ in Bethlehem. The wise scholars are not able to see God in everything around them. They seek to be first and to be adored for their knowledge. The Wise Men of the East let the Holy Spirit indicate to them the place where the Savior would be born. They did not seek to be first, but to worship God made flesh. As Saint Antonius, the Great says, even what is painful and makes us suffer has something to teach us. It is also a means for us to understand that pride will not take us far.

Una Palabra de Cristo es suficiente para sanarnos - A Word of Christ is enough to heal us
San Hilario, homiliae in Matthaeum, 7
-----------------------------
Spiritually interpreted, the Gentiles are the sick in this world, and afflicted with the diseases of sin, all their limbs being altogether unnerved, and unfit for their duties of standing and walking. The sacrament of their salvation is fulfilled in this centurion's servant, of whom it is sufficiently declared that he was the head of the Gentiles that should believe. What sort of head this is, the song of Moses in Deuteronomy teaches, "He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the Angels." (Dt 32,8)
Saint Hilary, homiliae in Matthaeum, 7
Reflection: Sincerity, humility, and hope. These three virtues were what prompted the Centurion to ask for mercy from Christ. He begged for mercy for a servant, whom he appreciated, and who was ill. Can we take the Centurion as an example and pray for each other? Praying for each other is a gift that we do not value or understand at all.

Dichosos los limpios de corazón... - Blessed are the clean of heart ...
----------------------------------
Try, then, you who are listening to me, to possess a cistern and fountain of your own in such a way that, when you take up the book of the scriptures, you too will discover some sort of interpretation from your own guide. Yes, following what you have learned in the Church, you too must try to drink from the fountain of your spirit. Deep within yourself lies “living water” (Jn 4:10). There lie the inexhaustible canals, the swollen rivers of Scripture's spiritual sense - insofar as they have not become blocked with earth and sediment. If that should be so, then what you have to do is to dig out and clean, that is to say chase away your spirit's lassitude and shake up the heaviness of your heart...
Origen of Alexandria. Sermons on Genesis, no.12, 5
Reflection: Origen tells us that we must have a heart full of hope, faith, and charity. This is the cistern he talks about. From faith, hope, and charity, I suggest the living water that allows us to be born again in Christ. If we have a heart full of rubble, we can do nothing because we will expect nothing from God.

La esperanza es Cristo, no el final de los tiempos - Hope is Christ, not the end of time
----------------------
Now mystically, the abomination of desolation is the coming of Antichrist, for with ill-omened sacrilege he pollutes the innermost recesses of the heart, sitting as it is literally in the temple, that he may claim to himself the throne of divine power. But according to the spiritual meaning, he is well brought in, because he desires to impress firmly on the affections the footstep of his unbelief, disputing from the Scriptures that he is Christ. Then shall come desolation, for very many falling away shall depart from the true religion.
Saint Ambrose of Milan. Catena Aurea. Lk 21, 20-24
Reflection: When will the end of time be? Nobody knows. We should not put our trust in the end, because hope can only be placed in Christ. To want everything to end is, in a way, to reject the martyrdom and sacrifice that bleaches our robes. We cannot stop trusting in Christ, because we will begin to get tired of the Gospel that He left us.

----------------------------
It is the wisdom of this world to conceal one's feelings with pretence, to veil the sense with words; to show things that are false as true, and to make out as fallacious what is true. But on the other hand it is the wisdom of the righteous, to pretend nothing in show, to discover the meaning by words; to love the truth as it is, to avoid falsehood; to set forth good deeds freely, to bear evil more gladly than to do it; to seek no revenge of a wrong, to count ill repute as a gain for the truth's sake. But this simplicity of the righteous is laughed to scorn, because the goodness of purity is taken for folly by the wise men of this world. For doubtless everything that is done from innocence is counted foolish by them, and whatever truth sanctions in practice sounds weak to carnal wisdom.
Saint Gregory the Great. A commentary on the book of Job, 10, 47-48 ; PL 75, 946
Reflection: The wise, full of pride, are not able to see beyond their brightness and relevance. They do not understand that greatness is docility and smallness. They prefer to appear to be great and beautiful, to show themselves as who we are: poor creatures that we need God in everything we do. Their violence tortures many innocents because that makes them feel their human power. Better to bring peace in the heart and thank all good to God.

Ya que la noche se acaba - Since the night is over
-------------------------------------
Since night is disappearing and day is coming to view, let us carry out the works of day and leave behind the works of darkness. This is what we do in the course of life: when we see night giving way to dawn and hear the swallows singing, then we rouse one another even though it is still dark... We hurry to our daily tasks; we get dressed after being snatched from sleep so that the sun will find us ready. What we do then, let us do now. Let us shake off our dreams, rouse ourselves from thoughts of this present life, leave our heavy slumber and put on the garment of virtue. This is what the apostle clearly says to us: "Cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light" (v.12).
Saint John Chrysostom. Homilies on the letter to the Romans, no.24
Reflection: We do not know what day or time the Lord will not call. Therefore we must always be attentive and prepared. Nothing can happen without God, allowing it. We will be judged with infinite mercy and justice. God will point out to us all the times that we have rejected his hand and acted on our interests. Let's try to live with faithfulness and docility to God.

Seamos humildes - Let's be humble
Theognostios. Sobre la práctica de las virtudes, contemplación and the sacerdocio, nos. 1, 3, 45, 62. Philokalia
-------------------------------
Since salvation comes to you as a free gift, give thanks to God your savior. If you wish to present him with gifts, gratefully offer from your widowed soul two tiny coins, humility and love, and God will accept these in the treasury of his salvation more gladly than the host of virtues deposited there by others. (…) For even if the treasure of those who are dispassionate consists of every virtue, the precious stone of humility is more valuable than them all: it brings about not only propitiation with the Creator, but also entry with the elect into the bridal chamber of his Kingdom.
Theognostios. On the practice of the virtues, contemplation and the priesthood, nos. 1, 3, 45, 62. Philokalia
Reflection: Today, we do not understand humility. Everything around us calls us to be relevant, valuable, essential, and adored. Society tells us that if other people do not follow us, we are unsuccessful. This can be seen on social networks, in which many people waste their lives, creating appearance and envy with convincing others. But the precious thing is to yield all glory to God. Let's forgetting ourselves so that God is the one who acts through our humble and docile hands.

Piedras vivas - Living stones

You are stones of the temple, prepared beforehand for a building of God the Father, being raised to the heights by the engine of Jesus Christ, which is the Cross, using as your rope the Holy Spirit. Your faith is the windlass, and love is the way which leads up to God. So then, you are all companions in festal procession along the way, bearing your God and shrine, bearing Christ and your holy treasures, fully arrayed in the commandments of Jesus Christ. And in your rejoicings I too have a part...: I rejoice with you that you love nothing pertaining to the outward life, but God only.
(Saint Ignatius of Antioch. Letter to the Ephesians, 3-4, 9)
Reflection: Although we are ungovernable and useless servants for us, God offers us His Grace to be part of his plan. He wants us to be living stones that build his Church in this world. Stones that give support to others who need the gifts that God has given us. Stones that support the blows of the world and the evil one. None of this can be done with our human forces. We need the Grace that transforms us and becomes stones of the divine Building that the Lord builds.

(San Gregorio, in evang. hom. 39)
-------------------------------
For our Redeemer does not cease to weep through His elect whenever he perceives any to have departed from a good life to follow evil ways. Who if they had known their own damnation, hanging over them, would together with the elect shed tears over themselves. But the corrupt soul here has its day, rejoicing in the passing time; to whom things present are its peace, seeing that it takes delight in that which is temporal. It shuns the foresight of the future which may disturb its present mirth; and hence it follows, But now are they hid from your eyes.
(Saint Gregory, in evang. hom. 39)
Reflection: God wanted a beautiful Jerusalem. A city that will fill those who live there with happiness. Jerusalem symbolizes the sinless human being who lives in the grace of God. But the reality is very different. The world where we live is just a distorted shadow of the glory that will come after our death. We can only see momentary reflections of God's presence among us.

Señor, extiende tu mano. La necesitamos - Lord, extend your hand. We need it.
-----------------------------
Would God ask something from us if we weren't capable of responding to God's demand and giving him what he owed? For there is God's gift but also our contribution. For example, it was well within that man's power that one gold coin should make ten or five more; but that the man should possess that gold coin with which to produce ten more in the first place belonged to God. Once he had given God the ten gold coins he had made, the man received a new sort of gift: not money this time, but the power and sovereignty over ten cities.
(Origen (c.185-253). Homilies on the Book of Numbers, no. 12, §3)
Reflection: If we read Rev 3, 20, we will realize that Christ knocks on our door with patience and trust. He offers us his hand to find the meaning of everything and everyone. But do not force the door. He expects us to have the firm will to let him in to live with us. Even if our forces are few to open the door, it offers us the Grace that makes possible what is impossible for the human being. But, many times, the fear stops us. The fear of being different, of changing our lives, of leaving behind everything that seems like riches to us. Then we look back, like Lot's wife, and become salt statues. Statues without life and unable to give life.

Subamos al Sicomoro. Pidamos misericordia - Let's go up to Sicomoro. Let us ask for mercy.
-----------------------------------------
The crowd that is, the general habit of vice, which rebuked the blind man crying out, lest he should seek the light, also impedes Zacchaeus looking up, that he might not see Jesus; that as by crying out the more the blind man overcame the crowd, so the man weak in the faith by forsaking earthly things, and climbing the tree of the Cross, surmounts the opposing multitude. The sycamore, which is a tree resembling the mulberry in foliage, but exceeding it in height, whence by the Latins it is called "lofty," is called the "foolish fig-tree," and so the Cross of our Lord sustains believers, as the fig-tree figs, and is mocked by unbelievers as foolishness. This tree Zacchaeus, who was little in stature, climbed up, that he might be raised together with Christ; for everyone who is humble, and conscious of his own weakness, cries out, God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(Bede the venerable. Catena Aurea Lc 19, 10)
Reflection: Zacchaeus climbs the sycamore tree, which is a fig tree whose fruit is not edible and is despised by many people. But from the sycamore, he calls Christ and asks for mercy. We, from our limitations and sins, must call Christ to dwell in our house. It is not easy to get into our deficiencies, because this entails accepting them and making them visible to others. The Blind did not stop calling Christ even if they were unbelievable. This should be our attitude.
