Somos débiles, pero la Gracia nos hace valientes - We are weak, but Grace makes us brave.

San Pablo decía: «Lo débil de Dios es más fuerte que los hombres» (1Co 1,25). Esta fuerza de la predicación divina la demuestran los hechos siguientes. ¿De dónde les vino a aquellos doce hombres, ignorantes, que vivían junto a lagos, ríos y desiertos, el acometer una obra de tan grandes proporciones y el enfrentarse con todo el mundo, ellos, que seguramente no habían ido nunca a la ciudad ni se habían presentado en público? Y más, si tenemos en cuenta que eran miedosos y apocados, como sabemos por la descripción que de ellos nos hace el evangelista que no quiso disimular sus defectos, lo cual constituye la mayor garantía de su veracidad. ¿Qué nos dice de ellos? Que, cuando Cristo fue apresado, unos huyeron y otro el primero entre ellos, lo negó, a pesar de todos los milagros que habían presenciado.

Reflexión: El ser humano es débil, limitado  e inconstante. Difícilmente podemos dedicar nuestra vida a algo que vaya más allá de lo humano. ¿Cómo pudieron los Apóstoles ser testigos de Cristo hasta su muerte? En parte es un misterio. En parte, sabemos que todo cambió cuando el Espíritu Santo les llenó. Esto nos deja claro que nada podemos sin Cristo y sin la fuerza de la Gracia. Esto es lo esencial para seguir día a día caminando tras los pasos de Cristo.

Saint Paul said: “The weakness of God is stronger than all men” (1Cor 1:25). It is clear from this too that the gospel is divine. For whence did it strike twelve unlettered men to attempt such great enterprises, men who were living in marshes, or rivers, in desert places, who had never perhaps gone into a city or the public square ? Whence did it strike them to array themselves against the whole world ? That they were cowardly and unmanly, he who has written about them shows, inasmuch as he does not even deprecate nor try to gloss over their failings. This in itself is a powerful proof of the truth. What then does this man say about them? That after the innumerable miracles they had seen Christ work, when he was taken prisoner some fled, while the one who remained, although he was head over the rest, denied him.

Reflection: The human being is weak, limited, and inconstant. We can hardly dedicate our life to something that goes beyond the human. How could the Apostles be witnesses of Christ until his death? In part, it is a mystery. In part, we know that everything changed when the Holy Spirit filled them. This makes it clear that we can do nothing without Christ and without the strength of Grace. This is essential to continue walking day after day in the footsteps of Christ.
